About: Self Help Africa (SHA) is an international non-profit dedicated to supporting rural Africa's economic growth and resilience. With 50 years of experience aiding smallholder farmers and agribusinesses, SHA focuses on enhancing sustainable livelihoods, promoting food security, and advocating for smallholders' interests at a policy level. SHA is collaborating with Trade Mark Africa (TMA) under the Economic Recovery and Reform Activity (ERRA) program, funded by USAID, to strengthen trade and investment in East and Horn of Africa. As part of ERRA's objective to enhance economic resilience for women and youth, SHA is leading a project on Building Resilience & Economic Empowerment of Women & Youth Entrepreneurs in Kenya and is seeking a skilled private sector professional to drive its implementation.

Job Purpose: The Communications Officer will design and execute communication plans for the Women in Trade project to raise public awareness. Responsible for overseeing SHA's communication efforts, the role involves collaborating with teams to grasp business dynamics, identify key messages, and monitor project developments for timely communication. Success hinges on implementing effective strategies to drive project success and uphold SHA's brand image through media interactions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement an effective communications strategy aligned with SHA-KE target audience
  • Conduct needs assessment and SWOT analysis for the Women in Trade project
  • Create and execute a comprehensive 2-year communications strategy for the project
  • Develop messaging frameworks for different target audiences
  • Create crisis response communication plans based on risk analysis
  • Establish monitoring and evaluation frameworks for communication activities
  • Maintain communication channels and materials for SHA-KE projects
  • Track media coverage, analyze metrics, and create reports
  • Engage in social media campaigns and produce marketing content
  • Develop relationships with media outlets and journalists
  • Collaborate with the head office communications team
  • Create various content types for public distribution

Qualification, Knowledge and Experience Required:

  • Bachelors degree in communications, journalism, or related field
  • 2-3 years of writing and editorial experience
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office and social media applications
  • Understanding of social media strategies
  • Creative, detail-oriented, and innovative
  • Graphic design skills are a plus
  • Familiarity with desktop publishing software
  • Effective time management and organizational abilities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and content management systems
