The Commission dates back to 1954 when Civil Service Commission was established by British Colonial Government following Holmes Commission Report, 1948; Civil Service Commission was advisory to the Governor in matters of appointments; At independence in 1963 it was enshrined in the constitution and renamed Public Service Commission; Independence Constitution had Regional PSC's but abolished in 1964 following constitutional amendments; It is the oldest Constitutional Commission and its mandate has expanded over the years.

Duties and Responsibilities
This will be the entry and training grade for this cadre.

An officer at this level will be on job training and will work under the guidance of a senior and more experienced officer.


Duties and responsibilities at this level will include:

  • Receiving, recording, packaging, dispatching, analyzing and preserving samples;
Preparing media, stains and dyes; maintaining biological cultures;
Caring for laboratory animals undertaking disease surveillance activities;
Performing vaccine, animal products and by products quality assurance tests;
Calibrating laboratory equipment; and
Standardizing laboratory procedures and writing reports.

For appointment to this grade

A candidate must have a Bachelor's degree in any of the following fields; Laboratory Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Medical Laboratory Technology, Biotechnology, Applied Biology, Biochemistry, Analytical/Applied Chemistry, Microbiology, Food Science and Technology in any of the following fields;(Analytical Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Biology Civil Engineering, Civil) from a university recognized in Kenya.
