About the role:

Responsible for supporting Light for the World's advocacy activities related to the implementation of the United Nations Convention of Rights for Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and engagement with other international bodies working in the mandate areas of Light for the World, the Advocacy Advisor plays a key role in the protection, promotion, and implementation of disability-inclusive and rights-based sustainable development at the international level. The Advocacy Advisor also supports advancing alignment of the Rights & Advocacy Team with the wider organisation and external strategic partners including Organisation of Persons with Disabilities (OPD).

Please note that to apply for this position you must have a work permit for one of the following countries (we cannot sponsor visas): Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan or Mozambique, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Netherlands or Czech Republic. You will have permanent residence in the country for which you have the work permit.

Your tasks

  • Support Strategy Development and Implementation: Generate thematic submissions, position papers, and key messages for relevant advocacy initiatives of Light for the World and its representatives in international fora.

  • Support country offices in international human rights/CRPD and other relevant international monitoring mechanisms and advocacy for their respective countries.

  • Support the Rights & Advocacy team in developing and transferring key advocacy messages to national entities and country offices, including for external communication purposes and in support of other thematic teams and Light for the World experts.

  • Advocate for Disability Inclusive Policies: Advocate for disability inclusive international cooperation and humanitarian action policies and funding for Light for the World and as a representative of Light for the World in relevant coalitions and alliances.

  • Provide expertise and support capacity development – linking where needed with other internal or external experts.

  • Knowledge Management: Support the Rights & Advocacy team on knowledge management.

  • Co-create International Advocacy Initiatives: Analyse potential opportunities for engagement on international human rights/CRPD monitoring and other mandate areas of Light for the World within sustainable development.

  • Brief Country Directors and partners, especially organisations of persons with disabilities, on relevant international policy processes and co-develop and support Light for the World positions and advocacy tactics.

  • Engage with advocacy priorities of country offices and partner organisations to identify suitable strategic partners. Collaborate with Communication and Fundraising Teams: Author and regularly revise key advocacy messages on all Light for the World mandate areas for use across all departments of the organisation.

  • Generate ideas for regular external communication output, such as press releases, web articles, and social media postings. Cultivate good understanding and awareness of international advocacy throughout the organization through regular internal communication engagement.

  • Facilitate Priority-Setting: Analyse quarterly, annual, and multi-annual objectives throughout the Impact & Advocacy department to identify contributions of the Rights & Advocacy team.

  • Develop quarterly objectives and key results for the Rights & Advocacy team to set team priorities and ensure team collaboration.

  • Monitor priorities of external stakeholders and analyse their relevance to the activities of the Impact & Advocacy department.

    Your profile
    • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., international relations, development studies, disability studies).

    • At least 3 years of experience in policy influencing and advocacy work, international development or disability rights.

    • Strong understanding of the CRPD and its implementation. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other relevant software. Familiarity with international advocacy processes and coalitions.
