This is skilled work operating a complex heavy motorized street sweeper to clear and clean city streets, gutters and parking lots.

Essential Job Functions
Operates street sweepers and other related heavy equipment and tools in order to clean debris from the streets, gutters, median strips, parking lots and other City owned facilities requiring street sweeping services.

Transports trash to the transfer station; clears debris from right-of-ways; cleans storm drains and inlets; identifies and reports hazardous conditions.

Operates controls to activate brushes and water spray for the removal of dust and pick up of litter; refills machine water tank as necessary and changes brooms as needed.

Responsible for utilizing warning devices as appropriate during sweeper operation and is responsible for vehicle and pedestrian safety in the work area.

Inspects sweeper for safety and mechanical defects; checks fuel, fluid levels, air pressure and hydraulic systems; performs preventive maintenance and reports the need for required maintenance; inspects auxiliary equipment for proper operating condition and safety.

Washes and cleans sweeper and auxiliary equipment as necessary.

Responds to emergency situations; performs special sweeps as necessary.

Maintains a variety of records and reports on street sweeping operations; logs daily reports.

Trains other equipment operators in using street sweeping equipment.

Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment including explaining street sweeping operations; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner.

Performs other maintenance duties as assigned.

Attends work on a continuous and regular basis.

Non-essential Job Functions
May perform lead work in absence of crew leader.

May perform work of Maintenance Worker classification.

May perform work of Motor Equipment Operator.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job function satisfactorily. Below are the required education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions.
Education And Experience
Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma and one (1) year of experience operating motorized equipment that includes the operation of a street sweeper, dump truck and other heavy equipment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience, which provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

CERTIFICATIONS OR LICENSES
Licenses
Valid CDL Class B Florida Driver License required at time of appointment and at all times while employed in this classification.

Certifications
None.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Knowledge of the maintenance, adjustment, and operation of street sweeping equipment.

Knowledge of safe working practices related to sweeping streets in light to heavy traffic conditions.

Knowledge of city geography and street locations.

Knowledge of State and City traffic laws as they pertain to the operation of street sweeping equipment.

Ability to operate a street sweeper skillfully and safely.

Ability to maintain and perform minor repairs and adjustments to assigned equipment.

Ability to read and understand street maps.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to establish positive working relationships with coworkers and the general public.

Skill in operation of assigned pieces of equipment.

Work requires exposure to hazardous conditions and noxious chemicals.

Work requires performance of tasks outdoors under varying climactic conditions.

Work requires exposure to prolonged high noise levels.

Work requires exposure to dust, grease, fumes, gases, potentially hazardous chemicals, and vibrations.
