About Top of the Hill:
Top of the Hill Girls Junior & Senior School is a Christian, non-profit boarding school located in the serene hills of Laikipia County along the Nyahururu–Rumuruti Road. The school is dedicated to nurturing young women of character, competence, and courage through a holistic Competency-Based Education approach. We aim to provide a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment where every girl can thrive academically, socially, and spiritually.
As we prepare to open our doors in January 2026, we are seeking a compassionate and experienced School Matron to join our founding team and contribute to the care and well-being of our students.
Job Overview:
The School Matron will play a vital role in the pastoral and health care of students, ensuring their physical and emotional well-being within a safe, supportive boarding environment. The ideal candidate will have a background in health care or nursing, combined with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
This position is ideal for someone with a nurturing spirit, sound judgment, and a genuine passion for working with young people in a boarding school setting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the health, hygiene, and general well-being of students in the boarding houses.
- Provide first aid, basic medical care, and health advice to students and staff.
- Maintain accurate health and medical records for all students.
- Liaise with local hospitals, clinics, and health professionals for student medical needs.
- Support students with ongoing medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, allergies, or epilepsy, ensuring proper management and care.
- Promote healthy lifestyles, good hygiene practices, and wellness education among students.
- Assist in supervising the cleanliness and organization of dormitories and student facilities.
- Provide emotional support and pastoral care to students, especially those adjusting to boarding life.
- Communicate with parents and guardians regarding students' health and welfare concerns.
- Ensure that all first aid kits and health supplies are well-stocked and regularly updated.
- Work closely with the school administration and kitchen staff to ensure students' dietary needs and food safety standards are met.
- Support the coordination of medical check-ups, vaccination programs, and health awareness initiatives.
Qualifications and Experience:
Essential:
- Certificate or Diploma in Nursing, Community Health, or related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a similar role, preferably in a school or child-centered institution.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust with students.
- Compassionate, empathetic, and patient in dealing with young people.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold professional ethics.
Desirable:
- Previous experience in a boarding school environment.
- Basic counseling skills or experience in pastoral care.
- First Aid and Emergency Response certification.
- Familiarity with adolescent health and well-being issues.
Personal Attributes:
- Warm, approachable, and understanding.
- Strong moral character aligned with Christian values.
- Culturally sensitive and able to relate well with students from diverse backgrounds.
- Able to remain calm and effective in emergencies.
