Kenya Peace Corps Full time $30,000 - $60,000 per year
Job Description
The Ministry of Education in Kenya has requested the support of Peace Corps Response Volunteers (PCRVs) to serve as Special Education Experts in Deaf Education. Deaf students in Kenyan secondary schools perform below average in Math and Science subjects as measured in regular assessments conducted in this area. This low performance is directly attributed to teachers' lack of adequate technical Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) signs vocabulary for teaching math and science subjects, inadequate teacher training on strategies to teach abstract concepts, and resources that are not adapted for Deaf learners. The assessment methods used are meant for hearing learners, with little to no accommodation. Deaf learners in Kenya have inadequate opportunities for exposure to practical application of math/science concepts and experiential learning.

The PCRVs will collaborate with Kenyan counterpart teachers to build capacity in adapting teaching and learning resources to suit Deaf learners, to brainstorm strategies for content delivery in the classroom, to spearhead the development and documentation of math and science technical signs, and to integrate technology into the teaching and learning process. The PCRVs will partner with local educators and Deaf stakeholders to document and harmonize math and science technical signs that can be used during classroom instruction and take the lead in training teachers and students on these signs and their use. The PCRVs will model strategies for teaching scientific concepts to Deaf learners by incorporating technology, art, and illustrations to help explain abstract concepts and develop relevant teaching and learning resources. In addition, the PCRVs will promote the concept of project-based learning by organizing and supporting Deaf students' participation in math and science fairs and projects that promote scientific innovation, to help them compete with their hearing counterparts. A key component of promoting Deaf education and inclusion is parental involvement through forums and events where parents can learn Kenyan sign Language (KSL) and take part in their children's education. The goal of this assignment is to complement the efforts of the Government of Kenya to boost educational outcomes for Deaf students in Kenya and to meet its overall developmental goals.
