Role Purpose

The Legal, Risk & Compliance Manager is responsible for group-level oversight, coordination, and accountability for legal, regulatory, risk, and compliance matters across Power Financial Wellness and its operating entities.

This role acts as the central second-line function, supporting the CEO and Board, coordinating external counsel, and ensuring that compliance and risk obligations are met consistently across countries.

Key Responsibilities

1. Group Legal Oversight

  • Act as the primary internal point of contact for all legal matters
  • Coordinate and manage external legal counsel (US and local markets)
  • Triage contracts, disputes, and legal issues for escalation
  • Maintain oversight of material agreements, disputes, and enforcement actions
  • Ensure use of approved templates and standard documentation

2. Regulatory Compliance Oversight

  • Own the group compliance framework and reporting calendar
  • Review and sign off on substantive regulatory submissions and correspondence
  • Oversee compliance with licensing, AML/CFT, data protection, and consumer protection requirements
  • Act as escalation point for regulatory issues, breaches, and inspections
  • Support regulator engagement alongside country teams where needed

3. Risk Management

  • Maintain the enterprise risk register
  • Identify and escalate legal, regulatory, operational, and conduct risks
  • Monitor mitigation actions and follow-ups
  • Support management and Board discussions on risk matters

4. Oversight of Local Compliance & Operations

  • Provide oversight and guidance to:
  • Compliance Operations Associates (Kenya, Uganda)
  • Legal & Credit Operations Officer (Kenya)
  • Ensure clear escalation, review, and sign-off processes
  • Maintain separation between execution and accountability

5. Board & Investor Support

  • Support Board and Risk & Audit Committee matters
  • Prepare compliance and risk inputs for Board reporting
  • Maintain investor data rooms (licenses, policies, contracts, audits)
  • Support fundraising and diligence processes as required

6. Audit & Governance

  • Coordinate internal and external audits
  • Track audit findings and remediation actions
  • Support the establishment and operation of the Risk & Audit Committee
  • Ensure appropriate governance documentation is maintained

Experience & Profile

Required

  • 5–8 years' experience across legal, compliance, risk, or regulatory functions
  • Experience in a regulated environment (fin tech, financial services, MFI, bank, payments, lending)
  • Comfort interacting with regulators, auditors, and external counsel
  • Strong judgement and ability to assess risk trade-offs
  • Ability to operate independently and escalate appropriately

Preferred

  • Multi-country or group-level exposure
  • Experience supporting Boards or senior management
  • Exposure to AML/CFT, data protection, or credit-related regulation

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in:
  • Law, Business, Finance, Economics, Risk & Compliance, or a related field
  • Advanced legal qualifications or professional certifications are not required
