Nairobi, Nairobi Area, Kenya UNICEF - United Nations Children's Fund Full time

The fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does — in programs, in advocacy, and operations.

The equity strategy, emphasizing the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families, translates this commitment to children's rights into action.

The UNV will be working with the Child Protection section in ESARO.

The IUNV will support the regional Child protection section to contribute to the realization of the SDGs, in particular Goals 5.2 (Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls), 16.3 (SDG 16.3-Promote the rule of law at the national and international levels and ensure equal access to justice for all), and 16.

9 (¬By 2030, provide legal identity for all, including birth registration; Preventing family-child separation, ending institutionalisation of children and strengthening family-based
alternative care).

Contributing to the Child Protection Systems Strengthening (CPSS) pillar of the ESARO Child Protection Section will expose the young professional to fundamental components of UNICEF's Child Protection Strategy, such as social service workforce strengthening, strengthening civil registration and vital statistics systems, and advocacy and programming on justice for children.

This will set a solid base for career growth in the Child Protection sector.

In the ESARO region, 11 out of the 21 countries are only at the level of system enhancement when it comes to developing a mature child protection system (9 are at the level of system integration, and only 1 country has reached system maturity).

Only 3 countries in the region have a specialized justice for children system. Further, the region has the lowest birth registration coverage in the world at only 40 per cent.

With reference to UNICEF's Strategic Plan , the UNICEF Child Protection Strategy, the Regional Office Management Plan and Collaboration for Children, UNICEF is committed to further strengthening child protection programming throughout the region.

The UNV will specifically support UNICEF Regional Office (RO) in implementation of programmes for strengthening Child Protection systems, with a focus on social service workforce strengthening, care reform, birth registration, justice, migration, and child rights in the ESA region.

Further, the UNV will serve as overall Knowledge Management focal point. The UNV will also have regular interactions with UNICEF Country Offices (CO's), UNFPA ESARO, and regional partners.

The UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

Documentation & knowledge management:
Serve as the Section Knowledge management focal point.

Develop periodic regional newsletter on updates/good practices in the thematic area of Child Protection systems strengthening (CPSS), compile updates from countries and relevant research in the area of CPSS, develop and manage UNICEF SharePoint as a knowledge hub for relevant resources.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
