Summary:

As a Linux System Engineer at Canonical, you will be deeply involved in the architecture, design, and development of core components essential for supporting the RISC-V architecture within the Ubuntu Distribution. Your work will include close collaboration with the upstream community on projects such as U-Boot, OpenSBI, and GRUB.

You will have the exciting opportunity to engage with various hardware vendors, contribute to cutting-edge platforms, and help shape the future of RISC-V within Linux and Ubuntu.


Location:

This role is entirely remote and can be based in European, Middle Eastern, or African time zones.


What Your Day Will Look Like:

  • Collaborate with a highly technical team to drive the evolution of RISC-V architecture support for Ubuntu
  • Develop high-quality code, introduce new features, and contribute to upstream projects
  • Provide feature enhancements and bug fixes to projects such as OpenSBI, U-Boot, GRUB, and Ubuntu installers
  • Debug issues and deliver top-notch solutions
  • Review code crafted by fellow engineers
  • Brainstorm ideas and work together to find optimal solutions
  • Engage with teams dedicated to Ubuntu for server, desktop, IoT, and cloud environments
  • Enjoy the flexibility of working from home with the opportunity for 2 to 4 weeks of global travel annually for both internal and external events

What We Are Seeking in You:

  • Hands-on experience with early boot software like TF-A, OP-TEE, U-Boot, shim, GRUB, or the Linux kernel
  • Demonstrable development experience on RISC-V architecture
  • A passion for technology and collaborating with talented individuals
  • Self-motivated, inquisitive, adaptable, articulate, and responsible
  • Avid Linux user with a diverse interest in the future of Linux
  • Experience or willingness to learn software packaging for Debian and Ubuntu
  • Resourceful, considerate, and driven by initiative

Additional Skills That Would Make You Stand Out:

Expertise with Debian/Ubuntu based operating systems and a solid grasp of Debian packaging and snaps would be highly advantageous.
