The Africa Public Health Foundation was founded in September 2019 with the aim of establishing partnerships and mobilizing resources to support critical public health activities across the African continent.

About the Role:

  • The Head of External Relations will oversee APHF's external communications and resource mobilization efforts, collaborating closely with the Communications and Resource Mobilization leads.
  • As a key member of APHF's senior leadership team, the Head of External Relations will be in charge of planning, developing, and executing strategies to mobilize resources from various sources and identify new opportunities to expand APHF's funding sources.
  • The Head of External Relations will supervise communication initiatives that promote APHF's mission, enhance the organization's visibility, and strengthen its brand.
  • Reporting directly to the CEO, the Head of External Relations will serve as a trusted advisor, participate in long-term strategic planning, and ensure fundraising strategies align with APHF's growth objectives.
  • Responsibilities also include managing day-to-day fundraising activities and providing oversight to the Communications and Resource Mobilization Leads.

The ideal candidate should have a strong passion for organizational development and be comfortable with an evolving role in a dynamic setting.

Key Qualifications and Experience:

  • Must hold a master's degree or higher.
  • Minimum of eight years of experience in fundraising or communications within complex institutions, grantmaking, or funding roles.
  • Demonstrated experience in cultivating relationships and securing substantial funds ($1M+) from various donors, including foundations, private sector entities, and government agencies.
  • Strong regional and global networks, excellent interpersonal skills, and a track record of working with senior leaders, funders, and stakeholders.
  • Experience in developing marketing and communication strategies that leverage digital media and engage diverse audiences effectively.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex public health topics for non-technical audiences.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously under pressure in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including building and motivating high-performing teams and integrating diverse actors into focused initiatives.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English, proficiency in other AU official languages is advantageous.

Desirable:

  • Experience in resource mobilization and partnership development, particularly in public health initiatives.
  • Experience in fostering multi-stakeholder collaborations, supporting events, and high-level meetings.
  • Previous work experience in various national and regional contexts across Africa.
