About Pana+Care

Pana+Care is a digital health platform that connects specialized doctors, local clinicians, and

patients through a real-time three-way teleconsultation model. We focus on improving chronic disease

care (especially diabetes and hypertension) for elderly patients in underserved communities.

Over the next six months, Pana+Care is scaling across public facilities in three counties, integrating

with national health systems (FHIR and DHIS2), and rolling out a Community Health Worker (CHW)

module to extend care into communities.

Role Summary

We're seeking a Backend Developer to join our lean technical team on a part-time basis. You'll be

responsible for building and optimizing backend services that power the Pana+Care platform,

including FHIR interoperability, DHIS2 data exchange, and supporting mobile and web features for clinical and CHW use.

Your work will directly support key milestones such as Month 3 DHIS2 integration, CHW module rollout, and technical support for scale-up.

Key Responsibilities

• API Development & Maintenance

o Design, build, and maintain RESTful APIs that support mobile and web frontends.

o Ensure secure and efficient handling of patient data in line with health data regulations.

o Collaborate with frontend and mobile teams to ensure seamless integration and

performance.

• System Integration & Interoperability

o Implement FHIR-based data synchronization between the platform and backend

services.

o Build and maintain the DHIS2 integration layer, mapping FHIR resources to MoH

indicators.

o Work with DevOps to configure data pipelines and troubleshoot data flow issues.

• Module Support & Feature Development

o Support development of the CHW mobile-first module, including backend endpoints and

data models.

o Optimize backend performance for low-bandwidth and rural deployment environments.

o Contribute to user authentication, access control, and role-based permissions.

• Testing &Optimization

o Write unit and integration tests to ensure reliability.

o Conduct backend QA checks in collaboration with the QA Engineer.

o Debug, refactor, and improve existing code as needed.

• Deployment &Scale-Up Support

o Support facility deployments during scale-up phases, troubleshooting backend issues in

real time.

• o Document APIs and data flows for technical handover.

Qualifications

Required:

 2+ years of backend development experience , Python, or similar).

 Strong understanding of RESTful API design and data modeling.

 Experience integrating third-party systems via APIs.

 Familiarity with FHIR standards for health data exchange.

 Experience with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL).

 Knowledge of authentication, authorization, and security best practices.

 Ability to work collaboratively in a small, cross-functional team.

Preferred:

 Experience with DHIS2 integration or public health information systems.

 Knowledge of Kenyan MoH data flows and indicator mapping.

 Experience building for low-resource environments (e.g., caching strategies, low latency).

 Familiarity with containerization (Docker) and DevOps workflows.

Contract Details
