Nairobi, Nairobi Area, Kenya Datawise Africa Full time 1,200,000 - 2,400,000 per year

Company Description

Datawise Africa is a Research and Development company focused on building the backbone of Africa's AI future. We build the data, AI, and compute foundations that power Africa's next century of innovation. From language and agriculture to healthcare and governance, we're laying the groundwork for a smarter, more resilient continent — one dataset, one model, one insight at a time.

We've built incredible systems, worked with world-class partners, and created some of the most important open datasets on the continent. But our work doesn't stop at collecting data — we turn it into knowledge that drives real-world impact. That's where you come in.

Role Description

We're looking for a sharp, curious, and analytical Research Analyst (Data & Policy) to help us transform complex data into stories that matter.

You'll work at the intersection of data, research, and policy — analysing data, uncovering insights, and crafting reports and publications that make sense of Africa's digital transformation. From dataset analysis to policy briefs, your work will help governments, researchers, and innovators see the bigger picture behind the numbers.

If you're someone who enjoys digging into data but also loves to write, explain, and connect dots across technology and society — this role is for you.

You'll:

  • Analyse datasets produced by Datawise and partners to uncover patterns, insights, and stories.
  • Conduct desk and field research to contextualise data within Africa's policy and innovation landscape.
  • Write analytical reports, white papers, and policy briefs that communicate findings clearly and powerfully.
  • Contribute to thought leadership pieces, blogs, and commentaries that shape public discourse on AI and data.
  • Collaborate with engineers, data scientists, and communications specialists to ensure our research is rigorous, relevant, and accessible.
  • Support proposal development and reporting for ongoing research and partnerships.

Qualifications

  • You have a background in Computer Science, Economics, Data Science, Public Policy, Development Studies, or related fields.
  • You can work comfortably with structured data (Excel, Google Sheets, or basic Python/R).
  • You're a strong writer — able to turn data into insight and insight into narrative.
  • You think critically, ask the right questions, and back your answers with evidence.
  • You're organised, self-driven, and can manage multiple projects in a dynamic environment.
  • You're passionate about Africa's future — and you believe in the power of data to shape it.

Bonus points if you:

  • Have published articles, reports, or blogs.
  • Understand data governance, AI ethics, or digital policy in Africa.
  • Have experience in a research lab, think tank, or data-driven organisation.
