Job Description
Duration: 24 weeks.

Where: Remotely from outside the duty station.

About the Position:

The intern will work under the supervision of Foresight and Development Results Adviser, at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. As part of the results reporting team, the intern will support drafting for the 2025 Executive Director. Annual Report to the Executive Board, which will be presented to the Executive Board in June 2025. The Annual Report highlights results achieved with UNFPA support throughout the year of 2025 for women, girls and young people globally, and maps trends, progress and challenges in core areas of work (i.e.: sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights, gender equality, youth empowerment, and population data for development). This year's annual report marks the penultimate year of the current strategic plan, and therefore plays a role as UNFPA delivers on its Strategic Plan.

A work-plan with achievements will be agreed upon with the intern, with additional attention given to shaping learning opportunities. Regular engagement with the broader team, willingness to contact colleagues through meetings and emails, and open communication channels to discuss ideas, processes, and feedback, will lead to a beneficial environment for the intern and the team to learn.

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Analyze the annual reports sent by the UNFPA country offices in achieving the 2025 commitments
  • Analyze the other reporting platforms including websites and social media platforms in terms of results achieved by each office
  • Develop a results database with all the 2025 achievements
  • Development of the 2025 "Orange Book of Results" highlighting the results achieved by the country offices
  • Support presenting the report to the Executive Board

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelors or Master's degree (enrolled in senior year of a bachelor or graduated within the past 12 months) in international development, human rights, global health, gender, monitoring and evaluation, data and statistics, or a related field
  • Strong analytical skills, hands-on experience with data analysis projects, and/or monitoring and evaluation knowledge is valued
  • Reliable communication skills, experience with writing clearly and concisely for a wide audience
  • Fluency in English is required
  • Ability to think and work logically and systematically, and precise attention to detail
  • Ability to self-organize, take proactive initiative and responsibility
  • Experience with working in decentralized teams, sound judgment, and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff members of different national, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds

Learning Elements:

Upon completion of the assignment, the intern should have:

  • Increased understanding of the work of UNFPA in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals and broader work of the United Nations
  • Increased understanding of global trends, progress, and gaps in the field of sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights, and the associated priorities and challenges
  • Increased understanding of the UNFPA theory of change towards its goal of universal access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights
  • Increased understanding of results-based management
  • Improved knowledge of editorial, writing, and communication skills tailored for a global audience
  • Learned from and interacting with colleagues from the Programme and Strategy Division and other parts of the organization
  • Worked as a proactive team member in a multicultural setting

Financial Aspects:

Interns do not receive a salary or any other form of remuneration from UNFPA. The costs associated with an intern's participation in the programme must be assumed either by the nominating institution, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students, or by the students themselves, who will have to meet living expenses as well as make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and other requirements. However, they receive a stipend to help cover basic daily expenses related to the internship, if not financially supported by any institution or programme, such as a university, government, foundation, or scholarship programme. The amount of the stipend varies according to the duty station. In addition, applicants must have medical insurance for the duration of the internship. Proof of insurance will need to be submitted before the internship begins. UNFPA does not provide medical insurance for interns.
