Education

  • High school diploma required.
  • Engineering degree in mechanical, electrical, civil/structural, or chemical discipline is highly preferred.

Certification

  • No certifications are required.

Required Experience

  • Proven operations management and commissioning experience in paper manufacturing and converting processes downstream of the paper machine winder. This includes winder operation, roll sorting, roll handling, roll wrapping, roll transfer to an off-site sheeting operation, and sheeting operations.
  • Extensive experience in 24x7 uncoated freesheet paper manufacturing and converting operations.
  • Strong project planning, scheduling, and execution experience.
  • Contractor coordination/management experience.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, reporting, negotiation, and leadership skills are required.

Job Summary
The Commissioning Leader will serve as a primary point of contact for all subjects related to the safe and successful commissioning and startup of Eastover's modified paper machine winder, roll handling, roll wrapping, and off-site sheeter operations. This leader will serve as a Subject Matter Specialist, best practices facilitator, coach, and mentor for the Sylvamo team. Extensive experience in operating and managing all the processes is required so the entire Sylvamo team is prepared to assume responsibility for the new equipment and processes when Commissioning & Startup are completed. The leader will be instrumental to developing an effective "bridge" between Commissioning and Ongoing Operations.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Safety Leadership: Foster and champion a zero-injury safety culture.
  • Project Execution: Lead the development and implementation of project execution guidelines, ensuring quality, budget, and schedule goals are met.
  • Contractor Management: Interact with and influence all contractors to provide their required deliverables in a safe, high-quality manner while meeting required schedules.
  • Team Planning & Communication: Organize CSU priorities and assignments and communicate project plans effectively to internal teams, clients, and contractors
  • Personnel Development: Oversee the development of assigned personnel, including mentoring and maintaining team effectiveness.
  • Project Control: Ensure systems are in place to monitor project performance, progress, and quality, maintaining discipline and accountability throughout.
  • Delegation: Appropriately delegate tasks based on team members' technical skills and experience, following up to ensure smooth project progression.
  • Continuous Improvement: Cultivate a Culture of Excellence within the CSU team, driving performance improvements.
  • Client Relationship Management: Develop and maintain strong relationships with all internal and external stakeholder groups. Review and approve proposals, ensuring alignment with client needs and company capabilities.
  • Project Controls: Utilize project management tools for cost, schedule, and quality control across all CSU projects.

Key Facts

  • Employment Type: Salaried Exempt; overtime applies only when exceeding 40 client-billable hours per week.
  • Travel: Extensive travel required (approximately 60% average during the year-long project). Primary travel will be to/from Eastover, SC. Some supplier site visits may be required. These could include international travel, as some suppliers are in Europe.

On-site presence seven days per week will be required during scheduled outages related to the project. Trips home must accommodate the project's requirements and schedule.

  • Administrative Time: About 20% of time spent on administrative tasks, with the remaining 80% focused on field operations, project management, and client engagement.

  • Delegation & Accountability: Ability to manage and communicate expectations clearly to team members, setting up a culture of accountability.
  • Relationship Building: Strong ability to build and manage relationships with clients, vendors, contractors, and other stakeholders.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel by car or air as necessary. Some international travel may be required. This would require a passport and potentially visas.
  • Ability to work in industrial manufacturing environments, including walking, climbing, and exposure to various environmental conditions (heat, cold, noise, dust, etc.).
  • Ability to safely wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) commonly used in paper manufacturing and converting operations.
  • Commitment to full compliance with all Tormod and client safety policies.
