Lead Legal Professional: East Africa Area Job Description

Role Overview

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the East Africa Area (EAA) legal team, providing strategic guidance and support to management and other internal functions. They will oversee all legal matters in East Africa, developing, supporting and monitoring the legal counsels forming part of the EAA Legal Team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic legal advice to management and other internal functions on a broad range of commercial and regulatory issues.
  • Manage the EAA Legal Team, overseeing all legal matters in East Africa, including contract review and negotiation, company secretarial work, litigation management, debt collection and human resources support.
  • Stay up-to-date with relevant regulations and compliance requirements, ensuring the organization adheres to them at all times.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Strong skills in reviewing and negotiating contracts, with the ability to analyze contract terms, identify potential risks and negotiate favorable terms for the organization.
  • Proven experience in managing relationships with various stakeholders, including clients, partners and internal teams, with excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of civil and criminal litigation processes, with the ability to develop and implement crisis management plans and mitigate risks.
  • Strong administrative skills, including organizing and managing information, scheduling and coordinating activities.
  • Integrity and high ethical standards, with the ability to maintain honesty and transparency in all interactions.
  • Attention to detail, with the ability to thoroughly review documents, identify discrepancies and ensure accuracy in all legal work.
Accountability
  • Risk Management: Identify potential legal risks, develop mitigation strategies and ensure/negotiate favorable terms for the company in the East Africa Area.
  • Legal Compliance: Ensure the organization adheres to relevant regulations and compliance requirements at all times.
  • Litigation Management: Manage civil and criminal litigation processes in the East Africa Area, preparing legal documents, representing the organization in legal matters and ensuring effective resolution of disputes.
  • Legal Spend in EAA: Manage legal expenses in the EAA, budgeting, monitoring expenditures and ensuring cost-effective legal support.
  • Overall Team Performance and Engagement: Ensure high-quality legal support within the team, managing team performance, fostering engagement and promoting a collaborative work environment.
