The Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) plays a central role in United Nations efforts to prevent and resolve conflict around the world. DPPA provides the Secretary-General and the UN system with timely analysis of political developments around the world. It provides early warning of possible conflict and extends expertise and assistance to Member States and regional organizations, often working in partnerships.

The United Nations has been actively involved in efforts to restore peace and stability to Africa's Great Lakes region, which has faced decades of political instability, armed conflicts, porous borders, humanitarian crises, resource disputes, and other destabilizing challenges. In February 2013, 11 nations signed the Peace, Security, and Cooperation Framework (PSCF) to tackle the root causes of conflict and violence in the DRC and the broader region. Two more countries joined in 2014.

The UN Security Council welcomed the framework and assigned the Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region to oversee its implementation and address the underlying causes of the conflict. The position is based in Nairobi, classified as a hardship duty station, and reports to the Senior Political Affairs Officer.

As Associate Political Affairs Officer (100%) you support the Office of the Special Envoy for the Great Lakes by providing the following:

- Monitor political developments and recommend policies to address issues and advance objectives
- Prepare reports, briefings, and communication materials, including for social media and the website
- Support joint initiatives, prepare for meetings, and assist with mission summaries and follow-ups
- Contribute to program development, planning, and budgeting, including reporting for the OSESG-GL Trust Fund
- Etc.

Part of the Swiss JPO Programme, this position is sponsored by The Peace and Human Rights Division (PHRD) of the FDFA.
