OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

The implementation of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development ('the Ocean Decade') commenced on 1 January 2021. The Ocean Decade will provide a common framework to ensure that ocean science can fully support actions to sustainably manage the ocean and contribute to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Under the overall authority of the Director of UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa, the direct supervision of the IOC Coordinator in Africa, the National Project Officer will contribute to the design, coordination and implementation of activities carried out under the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development

H/She will coordinate the activities of the Africa Taskforce and support resource mobilization for the Decade in Africa while also supporting the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO Subcommission for Africa and the Adjacent Island States (IOCAFRICA) activities on climate change adaptation, ocean literacy and communications.

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the UN Ocean Decade activities in Africa including Secretariat support to the Ocean Decade Africa Taskforce.
  • Support to resource mobilization of Ocean Decade Actions in Africa and support the organization of regional funders' meeting for Africa.
  • Coordinate and participate in side events and meetings in regional and international events and conferences including the 2024 Ocean Decade.
  • Support to the development of monitoring and evaluation of African Ocean Decade activities as part of the overall M&E Framework for the Decade and preparation of communications on achievements in implementation of the Africa Roadmap.
  • Contribute to the implementation of the IOCAFRICA work plans, focusing on Climate Change Adaptation, Ocean Science and Assessments, and SIDS.
  • Communication and networking in support of the UN Ocean Decade and IOCAFRICA activities in the region.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in the relevant field of Ocean sciences, marine sciences, natural sciences or related field.

Work experience

  • Less than 2 years of relevant work experience in programme management and support.

Skills and competencies

  • Good programme and project management skills;
  • Good analytical, organizational and coordination skills;
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment, with tact and sensitivity to diversity;
  • Ability to communicate effectively (written and oral);

UNESCO's salaries consist of a basic salary and other benefits which may include if applicable: 30 days annual leave, family allowance, medical insurance, pension plan etc.
