Contract Type: Volunteer – national hire (Small Stipend Provided)

Street Child's mission is to ensure that children are safe, in school, and actively learning. As a global organization, we provide high-quality educational support in some of the world's most challenging contexts. In East and Southern Africa, we work in Kenya, Mozambique, Somalia, South Sudan, Somalia, and Uganda, focusing on education, child protection, and livelihoods for caregivers.

To amplify our impact, we are seeking a Communications Assistant to support our regional office in strengthening our brand awareness, storytelling and content creation, social media presence, and donor engagement. This role is ideal for an enthusiastic individual passionate about social impact and communications, looking to gain hands-on experience with an international NGO.

Role Purpose:

The Communications Assistant will support Street Child's regional office (ESARO) by developing compelling content, developing and managing social media channels, and implementing communication strategies. They will collaborate with program teams across multiple countries to showcase impact, engage supporters, and enhance external visibility. Responsibilities include designing campaigns, developing social media content to build an engaged online audinece, and ensuring donor branding and marketing as required, advising countries accordingly. The Communications Assistant will also assist Street Child UK and Street Child Europe with their communications and visibility needs, helping country teams create content for global fundraising and advocacy efforts, such as video testimonials and multimedia assets.

This position will have a dotted line to the Director of Marketing and Communications in the UK. All communications must align with Street Child's global guidelines and may require HQ approval. All communications products will need to conform to Street Child's global guidelines and may or may not require HQ signoff.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Content Creation & Storytelling

  • Develop engaging written, visual, and multimedia content that highlights Street Child's impact.
  • Collect and draft human-interest stories, case studies, and testimonies from the field.
  • Capture and edit engaging video content, including summaries of programme impact and individual case studies.
  • Prepare success stories
  • Assist with Street Child and donor branding, and marketing guidelines.
  • Develop advocacy content, including video testimonials and other multimedia assets.
  • Support the creation of newsletters, blog posts, and other communication materials as required.
  • Assist country teams in creating content that aligns with global fundraising and communication strategies.

2. Social Media & Digital Engagement

  • Develop and manage Street Child ESARO's social media accounts (if/where available), including content scheduling and community engagement, in line with organisation guidelines.
  • Develop an annual social media content calendar, aligning with organisational messaging and content, where relevant.
  • Develop content for on social media channels and prepare relevant social media posts.
  • Create visually appealing posts, infographics, and short videos to enhance engagement.
  • Ensure content aligns with Street Child's global social media strategy and visibility needs.
  • Monitor digital trends and suggest innovative ways to improve Street Child's online presence.
  • Track social media channel performance.

3. Media & Advocacy Support

  • Support media outreach efforts, including drafting press releases and building national media contact lists.
  • Develop and distribute content for advocacy purposes, including stories and visual materials.
  • Support the policy and external engagement team in the development of policy briefs.
  • Track media mentions and compile reports on communication impact.
  • Assist in organizing online and in-person advocacy campaigns and events.
  • Support the creation of visibility materials, including office branding, banners, posters, flyers, and branded clothing.

4. Internal & External Communications

  • Develop a regional communications strategy aligned with Street Child's global strategy.
  • Assist with donor and partner communication materials, ensuring consistency in messaging.
  • Help country teams design campaigns that enhance Street Child's visibility and public engagement.
  • Support internal knowledge-sharing efforts by curating success stories and project updates.
  • Ensure Skyfish remains updated with videos, photos and case studies.
  • Maintain a database of communications assets, including reports.
  • Assist ESARO countries with their communications needs and ensure alignment with Street Child's branding and marking guidelines.

Person Specification:

Essential:

  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • Familiarity with social media management and digital marketing.
  • Proficiency in content creation tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Suite, or similar).
  • Passion for international development, education, and child protection.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote team.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken).

Desirable:

  • Experience in NGO communications or journalism.
  • Knowledge of Swahili, Portuguese and/or French.
  • Photography and video editing skills.
  • Prior experience in an East or Southern Africa contexts.
